At present, we recommend using a Mini DV camera
mounted on a tripod using natural light. HD or
hard-disk cameras are also acceptable. If the
shoot is at night, some lighting may be required
The camera is set at a fixed position; no zooms
are necessary as the shot is a tight medium shot.
We prefer very little head room. The bottom of the
frame is usually around the subject’s waistline.
To see our ideal framing, look at a
Sagas demo.
One end of the hardwire Lavelier microphone (look
at our list of other approved microphones) is
pinned on the subject. It might be visible. The
other end goes directly into the camera. Since
sound is critical, test before recording by
plugging earphones into the camera to ensure you
are getting sound.
The set should be someplace that speaks for the
subject and makes he/she comfortable such as a
living room or a kitchen. Set the tripod at least
8 feet from the subject.
You will sit in front of the camera and just to
the side so that you are not visible yet can
maintain eye contact with the subject. In other
words, the subject’s eye contact is slightly off
camera. This position allows you to maintain an
informal dialogue environment with the subject
Once you get the hang of it, the camera technique
is simple. We expect it will take you no more than
15 minutes setup time.
After the interview, you’ll send the mini DV to
us. Three days after we receive and check it,
we’ll send your payment.
